What is Acupuncture?

Acupuncture is an ancient Chinese form of healing that has been successfully used for over 2,000 years. Qi, pronounced chee, defines our vital energy which circulates throughout the body along energetic pathways called meridians. Imbalances are created in life, from external or internal influences including stress, diet, weather, injuries all of which affects these meridians. After a thorough consultation, hair-thin needles are inserted in specific acupuncture points, known as gateways to the emotions and organs of the body. This is to achieve balance to the mind, body and spirit to correct or prevent ailments and discomforts. Acupuncture treatments help the Qi to flow smoothly facilitating the bodies natural healing processes and balance the bodies Yin and yang energies. Acupuncture treatments may include ear and body points, electrical stimulation, cupping therapy, moxibustion, massage, dietary and lifestyle recommendations.

How does Acupuncture feel?

The unique sensation often attributed to Acupuncture is different to each person yet most people report a feeling of “well being” during and after each session. Sterile disposable needles are placed into their point locations and manipulated until a sensation has arrived. This is call “de qi” and it may present as a dull, heavy, warm or energizing feeling at the local site of the needle, radiation through the channels or other parts of the body. You may not feel anything at all for the first few treatments; this does not mean that it isnot working, it may be that you aren't use to this feeling in your body and in the course of the sessions the feeling will become more recognizable.

What to expect during your first visit?

The first treatment is my opportunity to get to know you better. I will ask detailed questions about your health as even the smallest detail may shed light on the root cause of your condition. This visit includes a full assessment using Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM) techniques and careful review of your health history and current symptoms. A visual examination of your tongue provides insight into the health of your internal organs and pulse-taking gives me a view into your current health status.

I will then discuss a treatment plan for your individual condition and we will begin treatment. Please arrive 10 minutes early to fill out a health questionnaire and wear loose comfortable clothing. It is not advisable to come to treatment either on an empty or full stomach nor is it advisable to drink coffee or alcohol the day of treatment.

How many treatments will I need?

Each person is unique and therefore will be treated individually. Since no two conditions or people respond exactly the same, during the initial consultation, I will discuss with you a treatment plan specific to your needs. Acute conditions are sometimes treated in a few session however if you have a chronic ailment that has lasted years, treatment generally is once or twice a week for a few months. The goal is to lessen the frequency of treatments until you only need to come as needed for a “tune up”. After the first few treatments we will be able to evaluate how your body responds to acupuncture. It is vital to complete the course of a treatment to receive the full benefits of Acupuncture.

What are the costs of treatments/ does my insurance plan cover them?

The cost of the first treatment is $80.00 (usually 90 minutes) which includes the full confidential history intake and a first time treatment. Subsequent treatments are $70.00 (45- 60 minutes). I sell packages of 5 treatments for $300. If you or your partner has extended medical coverage there is usually an amount or a number of treatments that are fully or partially covered. Likewise, premium assistance covers 23$ of each treatment up to 10) Please contact your personal extended medical plan to find more out this information.
